Digitalis purpurea, commonly known as the common foxglove, is a striking biennial plant featuring tall, majestic spires of bell-shaped, pendent flowers. Famous for its vibrant purple, pink, or white blooms with heavily speckled throats, this quintessential cottage-garden plant is a magnet for bees but is highly toxic if ingested.
Key Characteristics Growth Cycle: Typically a biennial. In the first year, it produces a low-lying, basal rosette of soft, hairy, oval leaves. In the second year, it shoots up tall flowering spires.
Height: Spikes typically grow to between 1 and 2 meters in height. Flowers: Showy, tubular, and funnel-shaped blooms arranged in a one-sided terminal raceme. Individual flowers resemble the fingers of a glove, which gives the plant its common name. Foliage: The leaves are large, oval, and covered with fine hairs, giving them a distinct woolly texture.
Habitat & Cultivation. Preferred Conditions: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, making it perfect for woodland edges or the back of garden borders.
Wildlife Impact: A vital source of nectar and pollen for long-tongued insects like bumblebees. Propagation: Freely self-seeds if flower spikes are left at the end of the summer.
Toxicity & Medicinal Use. While highly prized for its ornamental value, all parts of the plant are poisonous. The plant contains cardiac glycosides (such as digoxin) which, while fatal if eaten in large quantities, are used in controlled medications to treat heart conditions.

Plant images are used for illustrative purposes only, so you know what your plant will look like once fully grown.
You’re purchasing your chosen size of plug plant (by selecting “Plant Size” option above).
Mini Plugs: Each plug is approximately 15mm sq, containing tender young seedlings in need of pricking out and potting on to grow before being planted out.
Midi Plugs: Each plug is approximately 20mm sq, plants are a little more mature than the mini's, can sometimes be planted out if the weather is good and the last frost has passed.
Maxi Plugs: Each plug is approximately 30mm sq, plants are more mature, sometimes over a year old, which can mean well developed root systems and/or fewer leaves due to winter dormancy or cutting back. Generally hardened off and garden ready, though for best results good weather is preferred for planting out.
